When I first opened this assignment, I was confused as to how I would, in my opinion, find a flower pretty enough or a tree big enough to fit. It took me a while, but I finally came to the conclusion that it is not the overall look of the object but the mindset you put yourself into. What I mean by this is how you are able to find a piece of nature and turn it into a character that fits your imagination. For me, this was a bright fuschia flower bush in a park near my house.
I looked at this bush and it’s beauty is undeniable but the way it sits smack in the middle of a parking lot is what interested me the most. Although the assignment was to find something out of the ordinary and I chose the beautiful, bright flower bush, I decided to stick with this because of the odd place it grew. This is interesting because in a park full of fields, trees, and grass, the most beautiful flowers in the place were those that sat around dirty cars and littered streets. You can even see in the picture I took, the cars in the back and the wet dirty concrete but still the beauty of the flowers shine and take the spotlight as they should.
The part about this project I enjoyed is how I was able to make the experience my own. I was able to take an ordinary picture of flowers and turn it into my story and what I learned from it. Taking away from this project, I realized to more of an extent how beauty doesn’t lie in the eye of the beholder but in the eyes of those who choose to see a situation for more than what it is. Despite the decrepit environment around the flowers, they still grew and brightened the world around them. This goes to show that not everything or everyone has to settle for their surroundings, they can make light of any situation with how they decide to perceive it. Although I was unable to find the type of flowers that grew on the bush, I’m glad I found them.

I really enjoyed reading your piece! The conclusions you made were so inciteful; the way that you persisted that beauty and character are how you make them, is a powerful realization. My favorite line from your piece was ‘Despite the decrepit environment around the flowers, they still grew and brightened the world around them.’ This is such a powerful line that can be interpreted to represent people and their varying backgrounds. Thank you for this wonderful picture and piece of writing!

I loved how you took something that most people ignore when in a parking lot and made it something more. Imagination is a big thing I have read in some of the pieces and its crazy how during this time and through all these assignments we are able to open up our minds and create something of our own. You show the reader your true imagination and I love how you emphasize the beauty of this picture.

Your take away from this assignment was really refreshing and gave me a new perspective of it. I loved the line where you said, “find a piece of nature and turn it into a character that fits your imagination,” because that’s what I did in my writing as well. I appreciated how you chose something that could have been overseen, just due to its location with the “dirty cars and littered streets” as its background. One of your last lines that really stood out to me was, “not everything or everyone has to settle for their surroundings, they can make light of any situation with how they decide to perceive it.” This really applies to the current situation we are in, and although it’s definitely not ideal, I think we can try to make some light out of it in order to focus on the positives during this time to make it easier to go through.
