Everyday I wake up wondering why,

Why is this happening,
When will it stop,
How will life be after this,
I keep wanting, hoping, begging that this is a bad dream
Please God let this be a bad dream
How will we persevere?
We will because we must.
We persevere because it’s human nature to survive through it all
We have seen death and looked it in the eye and said “I’m not scared of you”
We have defied the odds throughout history of trudging forward,
We have always found a way,
And this too shall pass.
The sun will shine one day again
This time, we’ll be able to enjoy it with good company.
I really love this poem because it very simply states what we’ve all been feeling. I think each of us has probably had at least one day this past week where we wake up totally unmotivated and sick of our current situation. The hard part is there’s no definitive end date to this, and there’s no concrete future to look forward to because we’re in the midst of so much unknown. I love how you say that we will persevere, simply because we must. It’s brilliant because that’s exactly what it feels like. There isn’t much to persevere in the hopes of, but instead our perseverance is the mechanism that’s going to get us through to the end, where someday we will get to enjoy the fullness of the world again, with the people we love by our sides.

I really loved this poem because it embodies all of the questions that everyone is asking themselves right now. No one knows what’s going to happen in the future or how society will change from an event like this and your poem really speaks to that. Although you started with a more disheartened tone, I like that you transitioned into one with a little more optimism by the end. Your statement “the sun will shine one say again” is really nice to hear and shows some hope for the future. Hopefully, we will be able to enjoy that sunshine with our friends and family. The flow of your poem was also really nice and made it easy to read, great job!

I love your approach to this. Your transition from anxiety-ridden questions to an inspiring call-to-action is a perspective that I admire as we all handle this situation. Sometimes when I’m driving I see handmade signs that people have on their lawns that are thanking the medical staff or telling the community to stay strong. It’s these glimpses of positivity that remind me that we can get through anything if we all work together. “We persevere because it’s human nature to survive through it all” reminds us that even if we are scared we will get through this, it’s wired inside of us to survive. It can feel like we are out of control in this situation but we will get through this one way or another. Stay strong out there!
