To be completely transparent, I had no idea where this assignment would go or how I’d go about finding something I didn’t know the name of. I had actually been thinking about it for a couple of days before deciding to just set out into my backyard to hopefully find something that would fulfill the assignment. My mom and grandma love to garden so everything I didn’t know the name of (unluckily for me) had been labeled. That made my life a little harder seeing as I had wanted to find something quickly and get the assignment done because bugs were all but assaulting me in my backyard.
As it turns out, I found this little purple fella right as I was about to step on it. I genuinely had no idea what it even was because it looked like a weed or something because it had been growing in the middle of the grass. What I failed to mention earlier is that I recruited my brother to help me find something to make it easier for me to seek refuge inside from the bugs. If you look at the picture, there’s only one dainty little purple flower. There were more, he’s just a dumbass who didn’t realize where he was stepping and took out 3 or 4 flowers in one step.
I tried to see if I could unravel the stepped-on flowers but there was no use. Thank god at least 1 survived so I could complete the assignment. As I was taking the picture of my new buddy, my parents who were on the deck staring at me in confusion. I just decided to tell them I was just playing photographer and they shrugged me off. In terms of what the little flower actually is, it’s actually wild violet. To find out what it was, I typed into google “purple little flower that grows from grass”. The little flower turned out to be a pretty vicious weed according to google. And then google goes on to say that this weed can “choke out the grass”. I guess you could say that little flower is a badass but not in the best way because it can kill my grass at some point. I’m genuinely impressed with how powerful the flower had the potential of being. It probably would’ve caused more damage to the grass had my brother’s big clunky foot not stepped on a handful of them at once.
I love the way this is written! The way you describe searching for something for the assignment and getting help from your not careful brother make it very interesting to read. You describe the little flower as something mighty, which is a great way to phrase it.
I like how you told your parents you were “just playing photographer” while you were taking pictures. I told my mom the assignment because I knew most of the plants and she pointed out a weed in our garden and then I actually stumbled upon my subject (a little butterfly) in the grass as well.

I loved the casual, friendly way that this piece was written. As a reader, you took me through your whole process for this assignment from the beginning to the end, kind of like a story. I found it funny when you added the line, “he’s just a dumbass,” and added how you were getting “assaulted” by the bugs. I really liked how you talked about the delicacy of this one tiny little flower growing in your grass and then later on mentioned how it could kill all of your grass. This really added a kind of contrast to your writing and made it really engaging.

This was such a great piece! I loved the fluidity and the ease I had while reading it. I also loved how relatable the beginning was because I was also was very confused as to where this assignment would take me. It also was so interesting to see the contrast you pulled out between the beauty of your “new buddy” and the actual potential of the weed. At first when I saw your photo I thought of how pretty this dainty little flower is and then reading the end of your piece I was so surprised that it actually was quite the “badass” as you said.

This was a super nice piece. I loved the tone you had and all the humourous points you made with the flower being a weed and your brother stepping on most of them before you could find them. It sounds like something my brother would do. This definitely goes to show you that as cliche as it is, things are not always what they seem. Hope you’re staying safe.
