The world is in chaos
And too many are losing their lives
Horribly difficult to not lose hope
What has life become?
Even more are now struggling to get by
With a pandemic overcoming their lives
And the scary uncertainty of when this will all end
The warriors on the frontline risk all they have
As sanity slowly escapes us all
What has life become?
I sit in isolation missing little joys of life I took for granted
With a new unexplainable fear of day turning to night
And my focus and motivation struggling to hang on
I long for the tragedy from this virus to end
And for the joys of normal life to return to us all
This is an incredibly well-written poem. You covered all of what COVID-19 has done. You mentioned the number of lives that it has claimed as well as the “little joys” that all of us took for granted. I also really love your repetition of the question “what has life become?” That is certainly a question I think we all find ourselves asking.

Hey Elizabeth, I really enjoyed reading your poem. I feel like your writing encompassed all of the fears and worries that many of us seem to be facing during this time. I like your acknowledgement toward the fact that its really hard to find motivation right now, especially because it doesn’t seem like we have much to look forward to anymore. The poem also really puts into perspective how strange are circumstances are at the moment. Hopefully you find some ways to stay sane!

Elizabeth, I loved your poem specifically because I feel like it has embodied the whirlwind of feelings I get while staring at my ceiling at 3am. It just encapsulates the mutual feeling of anxiety that literally everyone is feeling right now and it’s super cool how you were able to catch that feeling and express it through your poem. To keep myself sane, I always try and talk to my friends whether its through texting or FaceTime calls just to be able to talk to people who I don’t see 24/7. I’ve also taken up new hobbies like cooking and painting which is kind of out of character for me but it provides a great distraction for a long period of time. If you can find something and just roll with it, it’ll definitely make the days go by faster!

hey Elizabeth!! I really liked your poem I thought it was very well put together and profound. The way you started the poem with explaining the chaotic energy our nation has and the death toll the virus has taken made the tone serious. You continued this tone throughout your piece by explaining how some are barely scraping by and explaining your own situation and beliefs. I agree with the point you made about how a lot of the little joys in life are stolen from us during this pandemic. Not only are little joys stolen but so are big moments people have been looking forward to like my cousins friend had to cancel the wedding she’s been planning for over a year and postpone to a later date which must have been devastating. Overall I really enjoyed your piece, hope all is well!! – Eleni LeClair

This poem is exactly what I think about my life right now at 1am. I loved the line “I sit in isolation missing little joys of life I took for granted”. That is the thing I’ve been taking the hardest since this whole thing has started. I miss seeing my friends on a Friday night, I miss going out and playing pickup, and I even miss being able to get in my car and go to my favorite deli to get a sandwich. In the grand scheme of things, I never thought I could miss those things as much as I do now, and I can only hope that I can do them again sooner or later. Awesome piece.
