Economy is a word that is open to many interpretations. Some people major in economics and learn about it every day, some people have a basis idea of what goes on in the economy from the news, Twitter, etc., and some people have no clue of anything going on in the economy. When I asked someone what they thought when she heard the word ‘economy’ she simply said, “money and people”. She did not quite know what else to say, but she had a basic idea of the main point.
I went on to ask her about college- the price, the quality, and the experience. She thinks “college is way too much money and the prices keep increasing every year”. She thinks America has not yet switched to a college system with low tuition like many other countries have because America prides money. People will do whatever they can in order to make the most money, even if it means takings hundreds and thousands of dollars from 18-year olds. Although she finds the price of college absurd in America, she does believe it will prepare her for her future. She thinks if she uses the resources the college provides and puts herself out there for internships and jobs, she will have no problem getting a job after she graduates.
She believes that people who go to an expensive college are often perceived as “richer” and “smarter”, yet that may not be the case. I went on to ask her if she thinks it is socially acceptable to ask someone how much money they make. She thinks “I personally do not care how much money someone makes, but even if I did, I would not go up and bluntly ask someone that.”. She thinks that it is private information and the reason people do not feel comfortable sharing how much they make is because they don’t want to be embarrassed or they don’t want to sound cocky.
Overall, she said right now she does not care too much about economics. She said she will most likely need to get into it more and understand the basics once she gets older, but right now she’s just going with the flow.
