I chose two very basic questions to gage how people are doing: do you feel as though your mental health is affected by your workload? and does your class schedule affect your ability to take care of your physical health? Out of the five people I surveyed, 2 believed their mental health was affected by their schoolwork while the other 3 did not. All five believed their physical health was in good standing and not affected by their class schedule. Overall, it seemed that the people I surveyed were currently in good standing with their mental and physical health.
As for mental health, my roommate mentioned that she is “always stressed that [she is] going to miss an assignment or be behind in readings when [she] has to read ~7 chapters a week for different subjects.” My floormate is in similar standing and believes “[he] can’t be as social as [he] wants to be” due to his workload. Two of the remaining three respondents believe their workload does not affect their mental health. They do not feel overwhelmed in the slightest and are happy with what classes they are taking. The fifth does not feel overwhelmed but instead that he “kinda needs to enjoy it since [he] picked it to do for the rest of [his] life.” Overall everyone seems to be doing well with only some hiccups this far into the semester.
As for my second question, does your class schedule affect your ability to take care of your physical health, all five believe their physical health to be in good standing. My floormate thinks “walking to class is a decent workout,” so his physical health does not suffer. Two respondents had enough extra time that they could go to the gym, which they enjoy doing. Another takes mental breaks by playing tennis when the weather is nice. Of the group, four out of five have or make time to get physical activity into their day while all five say their physical health does not suffer due to their class schedule.
After asking these questions and reflecting on the responses, it seems that overall everyone surveyed enjoys their chosen major and the work that accompanies it. Since they enjoy the work they have, they most likely don’t feel like it’s work unless there is a lot to be done. Would they feel more burnt out and like their mental and physical health were suffering if they did not enjoy the classes they were taking?
