In an 8:40 am chemistry lecture you could imagine that after the first week of classes it wasn’t very crowded, but you do get those rare students, me, who wake up for that hour and fifteen minutes. There’s two kinds of students who go to these early lectures, the ones that take notes and pay attention and the ones that are either online shopping or scrolling through instagram.

On this particular day I was a “good” student for the most part, but then I got bored and started to doze off. As I was aimlessly looking around the room I noticed a student with his hood up, no lecture manual out and of course a phone in hand. Don’t get me wrong you will definitely find me doing this in most of my classes especially in a class of 200 students. When I first noticed him I didn’t give it a second thought but as I continued to drift in and out of paying attention to my professor I realized he was still on his phone and it was already half way through the class. I got to thinking, what is the point of waking up for a class that you aren’t gonna pay attention to?

Us college students complain about these early classes and our lack of sleep but then why are we making the effort to go when really you could still be sleeping. Personally even if I go to class and sit there on my phone the entire time, I feel so much better at the fact that I went to class but really in the long run it did nothing for me. This all goes back to how technology has improved our way of life but also has become a huge distraction.

In that hour and fifteen minutes there seemed to be no thought of maybe even just pulling out the lecture manual but for I all I know he could’ve been taking notes on his phone or is one of those exceptional students who can just listen to what the professor is saying and absorb all the information but with Wingrave as your professor that’s unlikely.
