As I sit in the window sill of Trabant, the hussle of the 2:30 class switch begins, hundreds of UD students rush to and from class. Some dressed to impress and others having done what I like to call “the roll out of bed and go.” Within 10 minutes the streets and Trabant fell silent. All those students that just rushed passed could be doing anything from taking notes to taking a nap. As those students commenced class, I struggled to get through my pointless chem homework. Lucky for me a new distraction came along and allowed me to take another “quick break” from studying. This time the doors swung open to reveal a great deal of tours getting ready to explore our campus.
Trabant quickly filled with people in khakis and blue shirts, eager high school students, confused parents and I was filled with joy. Memories from my many visits here flooded my mind. I remember walking onto the green for the first time and turning to my mom and saying “this could be home” and her smiling back. I did not know that those words would come true and UD really would become home.
Anyways back to the people watching. The tours began with a quick yet awkward introduction, a few dreaded icebreakers and what I hope to be a disclaimer for all the annoying construction. I genuinely could not stop smiling seeing the possible new students all set to tour our campus. Some seemed overwhelmed, others not interested, but you could see the utter bliss on the faces of those who have found a home at UD and that is irreplaceable.
As the tours slowly began moving outside, Trabant became quieter and I resumed my work. Many groups passed by me and some smiled and others looked away quite quickly. At that moment I realized that they were looking at me because I am now one of the scary looking college students. Either that or I looked weird sitting on a window sill, who knows. Nonetheless, those few moments in Trabant absolutely made my week.
